Artist Highlight: Josh Pyke On His Humble Beginning, Songwriting, Memories and Dust Tour and Hiatus

More than 10 years in the music industry and is absolutely one of the country’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters, Josh Pyke never disappoints when it comes to weaving genuine lyrics and heartfelt melodies.

Josh has got to be one of the busiest men on the planet, juggling between being a musician—from touring the globe, writing songs, recording music to releasing albums—and being a father to his young family. Currently, Josh is touring his recently-released fourth studio album ‘The Best Of Josh Pyke, B-Sides & Rarities’ along with Kyle Lionheart and as soon as that’s wound up, he will immediately embark on a mammoth regional tour kicking off in November through to December in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the release of his debut album, ‘Memories and Dust’.

The massive 12-date tour will see him perform in Byron Bay, Lake Cathie, Katoomba, Canberra, Henley Beach, Adelaide, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Belgrave, Ballarat Central and Castlemaine. The Memories & Dust tour will see Josh play the full Memories & Dust album from start to finish, plus a second set featuring all the hits. “Memories and Dust songs played in the original way they are written... just some guitars, more intimate,” Josh spilled.

True enough, Josh Pyke's decade-spanning career has honed his confidence in performing live. He revealed that he no longer feels nervous when he gets up on stage, no wonder why he managed to take his music to international stages for the rest of the world to hear. The troubadour doesn't mind though if he’s hopping across continents touring, and one tidbit, he “loves to drink” before a performance.

Great, incredible! I have a young family and it’s hard to leave them but you get to hang out with your mates and hear the applause,” he enthused about his touring experience.

Josh realised his passion for music at a very young age. “I joined a band at the age of 12,” he said when we asked how did he start as a singer. He, however, admitted that it took him long to take it into a career because he had to make sure he was in the right direction and had to be creatively prolific. “It needs to be authentic, it comes from the heart... written without an agenda,” said Josh, referring to his songwriting process.

What better testify to Josh’s creativity than the songs that he has penned? Just like many songwriters, he grabs inspiration from his life experiences and guess which amongst his songs is his most favourite? The New Year's Song. But just as a music instrument takes its rest, so does a man need some time off. After the ‘Memories and Dust’ Regional Tour, Josh confirmed that he is taking a couple of years’ break from touring to “dig into some creative projects.” The good thing is that he’d still be working on producing and writing songs as well as doing some “film and TV stuff.” “I’m always in love with music that I can’t get away from it completely.”

And before he hits the road and goes on hiatus, the ‘Middle of the Hill’ singer shoots a message to his fans in advance: “Bunch of thanks. It’s been amazing to be able to do this for a long time now.”

And a bunch of thanks to you too, Josh! Eventfinda is certainly a fan!
